Base station mounting recommendation

There are several places that give ideal antenna functionality inside apparatus. Mounting near any window offers the clearest signal.

Boom microphone positioning

Keep the microphone within 1 inch from your mouth: approximately 2 fingers distance. Typically, the closer the better.

Do not submerge

Firecom headsets are water-resistant but not meant to be submerged.

Cleaning recommendation

To clean ear domes and headsets, we recommend: Clorox Healthcare Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaner Disinfectant wipes, or Oxivir – One-Step Disinfectant Cleaner Wipes with AHP. These disinfectant wipes are deemed the best option vs. alcohol-based alternatives, which can be harsh on the material.

Do not twist ear domes

Although the ear domes can be re-positioned at 90-degree increments, do not twist to reconfigure. The proper “pop-out” and “pop-in” method must be followed. Twisting will break your headset.

Base station antenna and Comhub orientation

  • The base station antenna should be at a 90-degree angle to the Base station. It should not point straight up and down.
  • For best performance the Portable ComHub should be positioned in an upright orientation. This is indicated by the This End Up arrow.

Recommended portable ComHub placement

Placing the Portable ComHub off the ground will enhance range. Increasing height enhances range further by creating more direct line of sight.

Firecom offers mic covers to reduce wind noise.

Firecom includes a magnet for optional mounting to vehicles, walls, panels, etc. Screw the magnet to surface, then remove Connect from the belt clip and place on magnet.

The headset serial number can be found in the right ear dome. Remove the mesh cover inside the dome to reveal.

The headset model number can be found on the headset band.

Headsets have auto shutdown to maintain charge

To extend the life of the batteries, the Headset will automatically shut down.

Bluetooth and DECT7 Wireless Shutdown: If a DECT wireless connection has been established, the Headset will power down after 5 minutes if the connection is lost.

Non-Activity Shutdown: Headsets shut down after 1 hour if not used.

The headset will announce when it is about to shut down. Shutdown may be
cancelled by pressing any button.

Rechargeable batteries are easily replaced

Our field-replaceable battery is used in all 500-Series wireless headsets and the SCH305/A Wireless ComHub. It provides up to 44 hours of operating time on a single four-hour charge (up to 24 hours in DECT7 models).

Use only manufacturer-approved batteries for best performance of your 500-Series wireless headset.

Control and amplify environmental sounds

Push-button control for conversation volume and ambient sound. You decide how much external sound to let in—the entire crew stays in contact, amplifies situational awareness and still get’s hearing protection, all-in-one.

HEAR OTHERS WITHOUT HEADSETS

Talk to the public, police, recovery teams—hear anyone when you have listen-through turned on.

WINDOWS DOWN, HEARING UP

Hear outside traffic, pedestrians, signals—even though you’re in the cab with the headset on, you’re not cut-off. This one is for the crews in New York.

AMPLIFIED AWARENESS

You control how much sound to let in—hear the traffic on an extraction, the back-up signal from your apparatus, others shouting on scene—amplify your awareness by hearing what’s around you.

Connect your own Bluetooth device to Firecom systems

Firecom Connect is suited for EMS, hazmat, mobile command, and training applications where situational awareness is the highest priority. Users simply leverage their existing corded wired headset or Bluetooth® headset to plug or pair to the Firecom Connect to communicate with their team up to 800 feet line of sight, hands-free. The Firecom Connect is rugged and rated at IP67, so it’s waterproof and built to last.

How to install Firecom equipment (14 Easy Steps)

Watch the installation overview video.

  1. Crimp the RJ connectors on the Firecom six-conductor intercom cable. Firecom intercom cable has a smooth side and a flat side with a rib. The lock tap on the RJ connectors must be on the same side of the cable at both ends, ether smooth or flat. When the RJ connectors are crimped on correctly, the white wire is on the right side on one end, and the left side on the other. If the RJ connectors are reversed, the headsets and bases will not be able to communicate with each other or over the intercom or radio. Additional intercom cable can be ordered by calling Firecom at 1-800-527-0555 (Part no. 108-0102-00).
  2. Route the cable. Avoid routing the cable with the coax from the radios. This may cause RF bleed over into the intercom resulting in a sizzling, hissing, or squealing sound in the headsets. If there is no other path to route the cable, make sure the coax is double-shielded as this will reduce the interference.
  3. Mount the HM-10 headset modules. For best all-around performance from your HM-10s, the module may be placed with the plug facing the direction of the exit from the vehicle.
  4. Mount the PP-20 modules. Mount the PP-20 in a vertical position. To prevent water build-up, drill a 3/32″ weep hole at the lowest point in the housing.
  5. Power the intercoms. Use a single-point ground for the intercom and the radios. This will ensure the quietest operation possible. Use a power connection that will supply a minimum of 11.5VDC with proper fuse. Use a Firecom power filter to help eliminate power spikes and dropouts that may result from starting the vehicle or running the siren and equipment.
  6. Mount the intercoms. Mount Firecom intercoms in an area that will not expose them to water or moisture. If this is not possible, use a plastic or fiberglass Water-resistant enclosure.
  7. Mount the optional remote head. The remote heads are rated for interior or exterior mounting. Place it in an easily accessible location, so you can reach it when needed.
  8. Install the wireless bases. Mount the bases on glass to ensure maximum range and usability. If glass is not available, plastic or fiberglass will work, provided no metal is directly behind the bases. Wire the power switched or hot through the fuse to the bases. Keep bases away from water and moisture by mounting inside a vehicle, or in a plastic or fiberglass enclosure if used on the exterior.
  9. Install the wireless headsets. Wire the power hot all the time through the fuse to the headsets. For fastest charge, keep the power switch off while headset is charging. Use a hanger hook and secure the charge cable with a loop to avoid pulling on the headset.
  10. Install the wired headsets. Clean the headset plugs with IPA or rubbing alcohol prior to use. This will help reduce static caused by dirt, grease, or deposits during shipping and handling.
  11. Using wireless headsets. Disconnect the charge cable before using the headset. Program the microphone gain on each wireless headset. Keep the microphone about 1/8″ from your mouth for optimal performance for most applications.
  12. Charging wireless headsets. Use only the 12-volt charger adaptor or vehicle power to charge your Firecom wireless headsets. Anything else may damage your headset. Charge the headsets overnight before programming and pairing them. This will allow quick and easy programming and pairing. Also check to see if the headset battery is charged; indicated by the red or green light blinking.
  13. Adjust the intercoms after installing the equipment. Adjust the TX audio, and RX audio after installing the radio. This will set the proper audio levels for transmitting and receiving over the radio and intercom. Verify the setting by performing radio checks without service equipment. See intercom manuals for adjustments or visit Service.
  14. Adjust squelch depending on your system type. You will need to set the squelch to on for wired headset system, and off for a wireless headset system.
Do we need to hire an installer?

This is up to you, as it depends on your skill level and comfort. Our systems can be installed easily with simple hand tools and the Firecom crimp tool. Most installations utilize a pre-made interface cable; however some radios, typically older models, must be hard-wired to the intercom, which will likely require the services of a radio technician. To ensure peak performance, final audio level adjustments will also require the skills of a trained radio technician.

Can the system be installed at the factory when our truck is being built?

Yes, we work with all the major apparatus builders. In fact, most builders prefer our products to other intercom systems because of the ease of installation and serviceability.

Which cables do I need?

Click here to view the Mobile Radio Interface Guide and find the corresponding cable for your device.

What is the best way to power the wireless base?

Either through the 8-conductor cable, or through the separate power cable included with the base. Note: Do not power the wireless base with both at the same time.

How many headsets will I need?

This is determined by how many people will be riding in the vehicle on a regular basis. Typically, one headset is installed for each seating position. Wireless headsets typically eliminate the need for job- or location-specific headsets, such as at the pump panel, or at the turntable and ladder tip on an aerial, because they have the range to work anywhere.

How are the different styles of headsets used?

Under-helmet headsets have a soft strap that goes over the head, allowing the headset to be worn under a fire helmet or inside the cab. Overhead-style headsets have a rigid headband and are used without a helmet. 50-Series Wired Headsets are plugged in to a headset jack to connect with the intercom. A 50-Series Wired Headset with single or a slotted-dome allows the user to hear ambient noise, such as traffic or voices on the foreground. 500-Series Wireless Headsets with Listen-Through Technology provide the same function with full hearing protection.

I don’t feel safe when I wear hearing protection. How are Firecom headsets different?

Firecom 500-Series Wireless Headsets have Stereo Listen-Through Technology, which allows you to mix in outside sound so you can monitor equipment, hear warnings or talk with someone not wearing a headset, all without removing your hearing protection or losing contact with your crew.

My working conditions are harsh. Are the headsets tough?

When worn properly, Firecom Headsets are built to handle rugged working conditions like rain, snow, mud and dust.

Can I connect my cell phone to the headset?

Yes, a cell phone can be used with a Firecom FHW507, UHW507 Wireless Headset or the DW501BT Direct-Wire Headset using Bluetooth™. Watch this video for pairing instruction, or consult the User Manual.

Can I connect a two-way radio to my headset?

Yes. Firecom offers interface cables (sold separately) which allow you to connect a portable radio to a 50- or 500-Series Headset. Firecom supports virtually all radios. Check out our Radio Interface Guide for a complete list.

What seating positions can transmit on the radio?

With a Firecom system, transmit capability is determined by the headset, not the position. A transmit headset can be in any position. Intercom-only headsets will not transmit on the radio at any position. Wireless headsets can be positioned anywhere if they have radio-transmit capability through a properly configured base station.

Can I put a headset at the tip of our aerial or in the bucket of our tower?

Yes. Wireless headsets can be used at the tip of an aerial or in the bucket, and they offer continuous communication during transition up and down the ladder. Check with Firecom for optimal base station positioning in this application. Our exterior module for wired headsets can be installed at the tip of an aerial or in the bucket of a ladder tower.

How many seating positions can I connect?

Firecom systems can connect up to 10 wired and up to 5 wireless headsets per wireless base station. Contact service@firecom.com (888-561-8098) for more information.

Can I add more positions after the system is installed?

Yes. For wired headsets, simply install an additional interior or exterior headset module and run the cable; no additional intercom boxes are required (up to 10 available connections). Wireless headsets may require additional base stations depending on the original system configuration (up to 5 headsets per wireless base station).

What is covered under the Firecom warranty?
Do you have systems for smaller vehicles?

Yes. Firecom offers solutions for one or two people. These systems work well in water tenders, brush engines, ambulances, and command vehicles.

Do you have a system for our ambulance?

Yes, we can design a system to accommodate the unique requirements of an ambulance, whether you have just one radio or a combination of radios and cell phones. Here’s a sample configuration.

Can our medics talk on one radio in the back while the driver is talking on another up front?

Yes, Firecom systems can be configured to allow multiple radios to transmit at the same time.

What makes the 5000D Digital Intercom different from others on the market?

The Firecom 5000D Series takes apparatus intercom systems to the next level by offering automatic squelch, enhanced noise reduction circuitry, touch pad adjustable volume utilizing membrane switching, and bright LED indicators. The enhanced noise reduction is achieved by utilizing automatically controlled, dynamic range-expanding preamplifiers at each headset, which control the audio input for the intercom and radio. Expanding preamplifiers reduce excess noise from unused microphones, resulting in better clarity in noisy environments.

What happens when people are talking on the intercom and the officer needs to talk on the radio?

The intercom allows for simultaneous radio-transmit and intercom communications without the concern of intercom conversation being transmitted over the air.

Can I connect more than one radio to the intercom?

Yes, up to four (4) radios can be connected to a 5000D Series Digital Intercom (capacity based on model selected). Ex. 5100D allows 1 radio, 5200D allows 2, etc.

Can I connect a cell phone to the intercom?

Yes, a cell phone can be used with a Firecom intercom system if it has hands-free capability (provided your phone has a headset port/aux jack). Direct-wired cell phone conversations will be broadcast on the intercom to all crew members.

Do I need to specify cable length when I order the system?

Firecom intercom systems do not include cabling. We do recommend you order a bulk roll of communication cable that we offer. Using modular plugs, cables can be run as required and trimmed to the proper length.

Are replacement parts available for the headsets?

Accessories like replacement batteries, FH-Series Headbands, ear seals, mic muffs, ear dome ruggedizers, NFPA compliant hanger hooks, and more are available for purchase. Visit our accessories page.
